MEET OUR BOARD

Andy Asmuth

Andy Asmuth

Founder & President

Andy Asmuth is a Colorado native who has been part of the Durango community since 1999. He is very passionate about helping people with disabilities and knows first hand the life challenges of dealing with a disability. Andy started the Adaptive Golf Program in Durango because he saw the benefits that golf can bring to the adaptive community.

“Having suffered traumatic injuries in a car accident when I was 6 years old, and subsequently spending years in physical rehabilitation to regain my own personal independence… I developed a strong passion to help other disabled people explore their own goals

My passion is to offer a fun sporting activity and give our golfers the opportunity to exceed their own limitations and expectations… To use golf as a means to develop social interactions, life skills and independence for everyday life.”

Karen Gallegos

Karen Gallegos

Secretary

Karen Gallegos grew up in Ohio (a farm girl). She went to college in Chicago, Illinois and then obtained a position in the banking and mortgage lending business in 1971.  She received a job offer from a savings & loan in Albuquerque, NM in 1981 to head up their Mortgage Quality Control Department and eventually was in charge of the entire Mortgage Service Department.  Karen moved to Durango in 1990 after marrying her husband Art (a Durango native).  She started working at Hillcrest Golf Club as their Office Manager in 1992 and retired in 2021.  It was while she worked at Hillcrest that she became involved with the Adaptive Golf Program.  After Karen retired, Andy and Molly approached her to become a Board member of the Adaptive Golf Program as the secretary.  She just couldn’t say no and has thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working with the other Board members, the volunteers and especially the participants.

Marc moved to Durango in 1980 and has no intentions of living anywhere else.
In the 1980s and early 1990s Marc worked in the Plumbing and Heating industry in Durango, starting his own business in 1985.
In the mid-1990s he had the opportunity to change the course of his life, went back to college and earned a Masters in Social Work from Colorado State University, Fort Collins.  Returning to Durango after degree completion, he was offered a job at Fort Lewis College and continued working there until he retired in 2015 as the Director of Student Health Services.  He also enjoyed teaching in the Psychology Department at FLC.
Marc has been active in the non-profit community for more than 25 years now, serving as a volunteer and/or board member with Hillcrest Golf Course, Adaptive Sports Association and our Adaptive Golf Program.  He also served as a board member, State Coordinator and Area Director and grant reader on various statewide and national boards related to his career at FLC.
On the personal side, Marc met the love of his life Marty, on a blind date in 1995.  They married in 1998, and their blended families provide many reasons to be grateful.  With 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandkids around the country, there are plenty of opportunities to travel and connect!
“We live in a community that promotes equality of access to so many activities that are not always available in other parts of the country/world, and I am pleased to be able to be involved in maintaining and maybe even furthering this access.”

Kelly Kelley

Kelly Kelley

Kelly has been an occupational therapist for 30 years. She has primarily worked in the area of adult physical rehabilitation. Kelly moved from San Diego to Durango in 2009 after years of involvement with the Adaptive Sports Association (ASA) as an annual participant in their winter scholarship ski program. It was through her involvement with ASA that she met her future husband, Scott “Griz” Kelley. Kelly is currently the Director of the San Juan College Occupational Therapy Assistant Program in Farmington, NM. Kelly has dabbled in various adaptive leisure activities over the years. She attended an Adaptive Golf Program clinic in June 2022 where Anthony Netto, founder of Stand Up and Play and the developer of the paragolfer, was demonstrating the equipment and providing lessons. It was Kelly’s first time ever holding a golf club. The minute she made contact with the ball, she was hooked! Kelly developed a strong interest in the sport and wanted to be a part of the Adaptive Golf Program. “I love that this sport is inclusive and allows individuals like me to be physically active, enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, and spend time with friends.”
